Proper toothbrushing technique
Brushing your teeth is one of the most important parts of a daily oral health routine. When done properly, brushing helps remove plaque, reduce bacteria, and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Using the correct technique can make a big difference in preventing cavities and gum disease. Brushing should be done twice each day and should take at least two minutes to ensure all surfaces of the teeth are cleaned thoroughly.
Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste
A soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste are typically recommended for effective plaque removal while being gentle on your teeth and gums.
Soft bristles help clean along the gumline without causing unnecessary irritation, while fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen enamel and protect against cavities.
Positioning the toothbrush
To brush effectively, start by tilting the toothbrush at about a 45-degree angle toward the gumline. This allows the bristles to clean both the teeth and the area where the teeth meet the gums.
Use gentle pressure so the bristles can reach along the gumline without damaging the gums.
Brushing all tooth surfaces
Using short back-and-forth strokes, gently brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
Taking the time to move around the mouth methodically helps ensure every area of the teeth receives proper attention.
Cleaning the inside of the front teeth
The inside surfaces of the front teeth can be more difficult to reach. For these areas, tilt the toothbrush vertically and use gentle up-and-down strokes to clean the surfaces thoroughly.
This technique helps remove plaque that can easily accumulate in these narrow areas.
Don’t forget the tongue
Bacteria can also collect on the surface of the tongue. Gently brushing the tongue helps remove bacteria and can improve overall breath freshness.
Replacing your toothbrush
Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles begin to show signs of wear. It is also a good idea to replace your toothbrush after recovering from an illness.
Maintaining a consistent brushing routine and using proper technique is one of the best ways to protect your teeth from plaque buildup and reduce the risk of tooth decay.
