Proper flossing technique
Flossing is an important part of a complete daily oral care routine. While brushing cleans the visible surfaces of the teeth, flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and along the gumline where a toothbrush cannot easily reach.
Plaque that remains between teeth can lead to cavities and gum disease over time, which is why flossing once a day is recommended for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Why flossing matters
The spaces between teeth are common areas for plaque to accumulate. Because toothbrush bristles cannot always reach these tight areas, floss helps remove bacteria and debris that could otherwise contribute to tooth decay and gum problems.
Adding flossing to your daily routine helps protect both your teeth and the tissues that support them.
Preparing the floss
Start with about 18 inches of dental floss. Wind most of the floss around the middle fingers of each hand, leaving about one to two inches of floss between your fingers to work with.
This allows you to control the floss while using a clean section as you move from one tooth to the next.
Cleaning between the teeth
Hold the floss firmly between your thumbs and index fingers and gently slide it between your teeth using a careful back-and-forth motion.
When the floss reaches the gumline, curve it around the base of the tooth in a “C” shape and slide it slightly beneath the gumline. This helps remove plaque that collects along the edge of the gums.
Protecting your gums
Floss should be guided gently between teeth. Avoid snapping or forcing the floss into place, as this can irritate or injure the gum tissue.
Using gentle pressure and clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth helps ensure effective cleaning without damaging the gums.
Completing the flossing routine
After cleaning each space between the teeth, use the same gentle back-and-forth motion to remove the floss.
There are several types of dental floss available, including waxed, unwaxed, and specialty floss designed for different dental needs. Your dentist can help recommend the type that works best for your oral health.
