Arch Development as Part of Orthodontic Therapy
Ryan Bates
Orthodontics or “braces” are not only an esthetic therapy, but more importantly, it is expected to improve function and form. If forethought is given to this treatment in adolescence, orthodontic outcomes can become more predictably successful. Arch development is usually part of the first phase of orthodontic therapy and may include appliance therapy or “expanders”. These are appliances that are sometimes cemented onto the teeth and then require cranking with a key to move the appliance to widen the arch. A few months of this therapy will usually go a long way to a successful orthodontic outcome in the end.
