Single implant (posterior-healing cap)
A dental implant is a reliable solution for replacing a missing tooth. Instead of relying on neighboring teeth for support, an implant replaces the root of the missing tooth and provides a strong foundation for a natural-looking crown.
Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant helps maintain proper bite alignment and prevents the surrounding bone from shrinking over time.
Preparing the implant site
The first step in the dental implant process is preparing the area where the implant will be placed. Your dentist carefully prepares the bone to receive the implant so that it can be securely positioned in the jaw.
This step ensures the implant has the proper support needed for long-term success.
Placing the implant and healing cap
Once the site is prepared, the implant body is placed into the jawbone. A special component called a healing cap is attached to the implant.
The healing cap helps protect the implant while the surrounding bone and gum tissue heal. During this healing phase, the implant gradually integrates with the bone in a process called osseointegration.
Healing and temporary tooth options
The healing period allows the implant to become stable and secure within the jawbone. During this time, your dentist will monitor the healing process to ensure everything is progressing properly.
In some cases, a temporary tooth may be placed to fill the space while the implant site heals.
Placing the abutment
After the implant has fully integrated with the bone, the healing cap is removed. An abutment is then attached to the implant.
The abutment acts as the connector between the implant and the final crown.
Restoring the tooth with a crown
Once the abutment is in place, a custom dental crown is placed over it. The crown is designed to match the shape, color, and function of your natural teeth.
After the crown is secured, the implant restoration is complete and the tooth is restored to normal appearance and function.
