Locator retained overdenture
A locator-retained overdenture is a treatment option designed for patients who need to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower arch of the mouth. This type of restoration combines the stability of dental implants with the convenience of a removable denture.
Unlike traditional dentures that rest only on the gums, locator-retained overdentures attach to dental implants placed in the jawbone. These implants provide a secure foundation that helps improve comfort, stability, and function when eating or speaking. Handout-Locator-Retained-Overde…
What is a locator-retained overdenture
A locator-retained overdenture is a removable prosthesis that contains replacement teeth set into a pink base designed to fit comfortably over the gums. The denture attaches to implants using small button-like connectors called locators.
These locator attachments allow the denture to snap securely into place while still allowing it to be removed for cleaning and maintenance.
Benefits of implant-retained dentures
Implant-retained overdentures provide several advantages compared to traditional dentures. Because the denture is anchored to implants, it offers greater stability and improved chewing ability.
Implants also help preserve the underlying jawbone. When teeth are missing, the bone can gradually shrink over time. Dental implants act like artificial tooth roots, helping maintain bone structure and support the surrounding tissues.
The treatment process
Treatment typically begins with an impression of the mouth so a temporary denture can be created. Diagnostic images are then taken to carefully plan the placement of the dental implants.
Once the implants are placed, healing caps are positioned over the implants while the bone integrates with them. During this healing phase, patients can continue wearing their temporary denture.
Final overdenture placement
After the implants have healed, new impressions are taken with the locator attachments in place. These impressions are used by a dental laboratory to fabricate the final overdenture.
During follow-up appointments, the dentist checks the fit and bite alignment of the denture. Multiple adjustments may be made to ensure the restoration fits comfortably and functions properly. Once finalized, the overdenture snaps securely onto the locator attachments.
Long-term function and comfort
Locator-retained overdentures are designed to restore the appearance of natural teeth while improving comfort and function. The implant attachments help keep the denture stable, allowing patients to eat and speak with greater confidence.
